Meet the Experts

Gene Siciliano is a consultant, speaker, and management coach, and the author of three books on finance. Gene is the founder and president of Western Management Associates, a financial management consulting and training firm. His firm solves business problems for middle market and nonprofit clients that have manifested in the form of cash flow shortages, falling profit margins, and declining growth rates. He also helps rapidly growing organizations define long-term goals and execute short term implementation plans.

Gene has served on the boards of numerous non-profit charitable and professional organizations for many years. He is formerly Chairman of the Board of Exceptional Children’s Foundation in Culver City, CA and Chair-Elect of New Horizons SFVAR in North Hills, CA. Other board positions at the chapter level have included the National Speakers Association, the Institute of Management Consultants and Toastmasters International.

Dr. Terrie Temkin is a founding principal of CoreStrategies for Nonprofits, Inc., an international consulting firm that builds organizational infrastructure by providing expertise, strategy and value. She is an award-winning speaker and an engaging group facilitator, who brings more than 30 years of nonprofit management and adult education experience to her work. Considered by her colleagues as a thought leader in the area of governance, Terrie was one of the first to talk about strategic thinking as a governance function and the importance of expectations. She is a co-author of Community Engagement Governance, a new framework for governance that is gaining wide acceptance. A prolific writer, her work can be found throughout the world in books, journals, blogs and her popular column, “On Nonprofits.”

Terrie is committed to benefiting the nonprofit sector in ways beyond having an impact on her own clients. She is actively involved in several of the profession’s associations and serves as editor or a member of the editorial committee of a number of the field’s most respected journals and newsletters. She is also an adjunct faculty member, teaching governance, for Florida Atlantic University’s Master’s Degree in Nonprofit Management.

Jeffrey S. Tenenbaum is a partner with and chair of the Nonprofit Organizations Practice Group of Venable LLP. The firm provides legal counseling to and advocacy for over 600 nonprofit organizations nationwide. Resident in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office, Mr. Tenenbaum concentrates his practice exclusively on nonprofit law, counseling his clients on a broad array of legal issues and representing them before numerous federal and state agencies and on Capitol Hill, and in connection with governmental investigations, enforcement actions, litigation, arbitration, and dealing with the media. He was named the Outstanding Nonprofit Lawyer of the Year in 2006 by the American Bar Association, was an inaugural recipient of the Washington Business Journal’s Top Washington Lawyers award in 2004, and received the distinguished Chairman’s Award in 1997 and again in 2004 from the Greater Washington Society of Association Executives and The Center for Association Leadership.

Mr. Tenenbaum serves as special counsel to the American Society of Association Executives. He is the author of the book Association Tax Compliance Guide, published by ASAE, and is a contributor to numerous ASAE books and other publications. Mr. Tenenbaum is a frequent lecturer, author and commentator on nonprofit legal issues for the major industry organizations and publications, as well as for mainstream media such as the New York Times and The Washington Post, and served as a “professor” for the ASAE Virtual Law School. He is an active participant in the nonprofit community who serves on several industry boards and committees.

Lawrence Zimbler specializes in tax-exempt organizations, trusts & estates, retirement and divorce, and has been in private tax practice since 1985. Clients include individuals, small businesses, trusts, estates and non-profit organizations. He has successfully represented clients before IRS collection, examination and appeals divisions on issues such as offers in compromise, the accumulated earnings tax, innocent spouse claims, and he has successfully obtained private letter rulings and tax exempt status for organizations.

Larry has been involved in the tax profession since July 1975, spending just under ten years with the IRS in a variety of technical and managerial positions in the Detroit District and former Midwest Regional Office. Additionally, Larry has ten years experience in the tax software industry. Larry holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics and a Master of Science in Taxation degree. He is an enrolled agent and is a member of NAEA and NATP (serving on the Michigan Chapter Board of Directors and as State Chapter Treasurer for NATP). He has taught undergraduate accounting and tax classes and has authored articles and training books on tax issues.

Larry is an active volunteer leader with the Boy Scouts of America, where he is a recipient of the Silver Beaver award, the OA Founder's Award and the James E West Fellowship. He is the owner of 4square Tax & Accounting, LLC.
